Private Equity has been making big plays in Ophthalmology for the last several years- But PE's aren't just big news in the eye world, they're also making big gains with medical practices in general.

Here's a link to a good article about private equity and medicine https://www.healthleadersmedia.com/finance/private-equity-purchasing-more-physician-practices

In summary, the article points out that PE groups typically look for majority ownership opportunities and pay out over $1M per physician.  The article refers to a study that found independent private practices are "rapidly disappearing".  The article goes on to note the rise of the "corporatization of medicine."

Anika Goodwin

Telemedine in Ophthalmology.  EYEmergencyMD is an up and coming organization.

EYEmergencyMD’s mission is to bridge the gap between eye physicians and patients who require acute eye care and screening. An acute care solution for eye issues does not currently exist, and the small number of trained eye physicians makes the need even more pronounced. Patients are relegated to busy emergency rooms or urgent cares which often lack ready access to eye specialists. In exchange for inefficient, less specialized care, patients pay exorbitant costs for visits that typically don’t resolve the problem and require additional follow up with an eye physician during normal business hours.

What’s EYEmergencyMD’s solution? First, we’re creating eye screening centers in places people frequent, eliminating the common excuses that eye care is not easy to find or a priority. When patients present with complex eye issues, we help them find and access the care they need. Second, we offer immediate care from board certified ophthalmologists, 24/7/365 from the palm of your hand, anywhere you can access a network connection.

Simply offering a service does not create such an affect.  A company must deliver this service at top notch quality standards and with added value, efficiency, and convenience.  Although we are first to offer nationwide acute eye care diagnosis and treatment, the ocular screening market has been around for quite some time.  EMD is approaching this market with fresh eyes and visual clarity, seeking to expand and improve the process for the benefit of the patient.  Namely, ensuring patients obtain follow up care by facilitating connections to local ophthalmologists.

Just as passenger cars for hire were once known as “catching a cab” but is now are known almost exclusively as “ubering”, EYEmergencyMD seeks to become a household name, synonymous with acute eye care and screenings. The telemedicine industry is here and it doesn’t seem to be losing momentum.  We hope you will take advantage of this offering in assuring healthy vision for a lifetime.

Life with an acute eye problem just got a lot easier in all 50 states. Why?  Because vision matters.

EYEmergencyMD is proud to announce that we have been recognized by the American Telemedicine Association as recipient of the 2019 President’s Award for Innovation in Remote Healthcare Delivery.  We hope this is just one of many ways we will be able to impact the future of eye care delivery and access.

Visit us at www.EYEmergencyMD.com whenever you or a loved one has an eye issue.

Routine Calibration Checks Help Your Practice Run Smoothly and Mean Better Patient Care!

During my consulting visits with practices, I often ask the technical staff when they last checked the calibration on the applanation tonometers and manual keratometers. The response given is “sometimes it’s done” or “it’s never been done”. We check these instruments weekly (the recommendation is monthly) and find that the units aren't calibrating correctly.  We recently had two applanation tonometers off by 4mmHg. We have also detected a 0.50 diopter difference during the keratometer calibration process a few times. The IOL Master and optical coherence tomography units are other equipment types that should be routinely checked for accuracy.

To get in touch with the author of this quick tip, contact Denese Smith at Genesis Ophthalmic Training.

Denese is well-versed in the day to day operations of an ophthalmic office including scheduling, billing and coding, revenue management, contract negotiations, staff training , policy and procedure development and implementation.

INDIANA Ophthalmology practice for sale!

Own an ophthalmology group practice in a welcoming, family-friendly city with a great 4 seasons location on the Ohio river.

“Doctors who visit here, stay here!”

An ophthalmology practice in Southern Indiana is looking for a talented ophthalmologist for their group.

The practice was started by local physicians who have worked in the community for the last 25+ years. Their patients know and trust them and are very loyal. Office personnel work together well, are well trained and genuinely care about great patient care. The practice has grown year over year since its inception and is busy clinically and surgically. The incoming ophthalmologist can expect to see 30 to 40 patients per day and perform 1,000+ surgeries per year, depending on skills, experience and productivity.

It has a very tight working relationship with a large, local health care system and a very active group of referring Optometrists.

This location in Indiana is a growing city that you and your family will love.  This city is on the Ohio River and it's the commercial and cultural hub of southwest Indiana and the nearby regions of Illinois and Kentucky. Downtown is modern and attractive with historic areas and a pedestrian mall near the waterfront. Indiana University is building a large medical center in town and this is a huge boon for the area and will help to attract young professionals.  The city has a direct population of 175k and an MSA of 850k, which includes Southern Indiana, Western Kentucky and Southern Illinois. People here are friendly, hospitable and very social. Your family will enjoy sunset walks on the waterfront, visiting museums, attending minor league baseball games, great concerts, art festivals and the local zoo. Best Questions Young Ophthalmologists Should Ask When Interviewing for Job Opportunities.

Here's a helpful checklist for Young Ophthalmologists who are searching for jobs or partnership opportunities.

Questions for YO’s to Ask or Discuss When Interviewing for Jobs and Partnership Opportunities- Drew Caldwell at OjO

Wouldn’t it be great if you had a career mentor- or a career coach or counselor who could help you navigate the national MD/Ophthalmology jobs scene?  That’s what this checklist is all about. I refer to this checklist as the “Things I Wish I Had Known to Ask” questions and topics for ophtho job seekers. This list has been 11 years in the making and is based on my experience and the experience of countless surgeons I’ve worked and talked with about finding the best ophthalmology partnership or job opportunity.  Keep in mind- you, as a YO will have many, many good job choices and options- but not all opportunities are created equal. Put another way, it’s easy to find a job, it’s a lot tougher to find a really great opportunity with a talented, ethical team of MDs that you’ll fit in well with.

Here’s the List.

Who owns the ASC?

What is the commute time from the office where I’ll work to the ASC?

Doctor and Staff turnover.

How often do associates become partners?

How does the practice handle negative online reviews?

Is there a Mentor in the House?

Are there any teaching opportunities with this position (formally or informally)?

How busy will you really, truly, actually be?

Where will your patients come from?

I don’t understand the bonus structure in my contract- what do I do?

What will the buy-in cost and what does it include---What’s not included?

How numerous and how strong are their relationships with primary care MDs and ODs?

How important are word of mouth patient referrals to the practice?

Is the practice adding multiple doctors at the same time?

How will the practice market you so that you can both be quickly successful?

Is the practice considering a merger, acquiring another group or perhaps selling out to private equity?

If I prefer not to become a partner, will I be allowed to stay on as an employee?

What are the steps to becoming a partner?

What are the advantages of becoming a partner?

Would you mind if I talk with the last doctor who was here?

In what ways is the practice always looking to improve patient eye care?

How happy are you with your EMR?

What does the group do or want to do to attract and keep top notch non-MD talent?

How will you fit into the practice?

What is the practice culture? What’s it like to actually work here?

How much time will be spent at remote locations?

What is the commute time to each location?

What kinds of patients will be sent to you from other doctors in the organization?

Tech support...experienced--- turnover?

Can you meet and speak with people in other departments, not just doctors. Such as front desk, billing, techs, marketing, administration? Do you tend to hear a lot of people talking about why they believe in the organization?

How are decisions, especially big decisions in the practice, made?

Flexibility in the schedule.

Has your attorney reviewed your contract? Suppose you lose your job or decide to switch practices...Will you be able to stay in the area and still practice locally or will you and your family have to relocate?

Thanks for reading OjO's blog on the "Best Questions for YOs to Ask When Searching for a Job".

SEE does a great job of vetting and screening ophthalmologists so that the care given is exceptional.  Only Board Certified Ophthalmologists are able to be lead surgeons on their trips.  Ophthalmology Residents and Fellows can attend and pitch in but cannot perform surgery.  This is a great way for YOs to get exposure to the world's blind poor, who desperately need our help!  SEE has a lot of opportunities, especially for fellowship trained ophthalmologists to teach and train ophthalmologists in their home countries.  This is a neat, sustainable way to empower local eye surgeons to better care for their communities.
Personal note:  The late, Dr. Harry Brown, was the energetic, compassionate, visionary behind SEE International. Harry's life touched so many and his legacy lives on through SEE.

I just had to post this because it is a really unique, attention getting ophthalmology job listing.

Granted this style of post won't work for every practice but it is an encouragement to be authentic when you're posting your ophthalmology practice opportunity on the AAO or elsewhere. Kudos to Dr. Evan Wolfe for trying something novel!

OPHTHALMOLOGIST to join our way-busy, wicked-fun, utopian, MD/OD practice in suburban Alaska!
Wolf Eye Center, Inc
WASILLA, Alaska

Seriously, we are friggin' awesome (if not entirely utopian or modest), and we need you to join us to absorb the tremendous demand for our amazing patient care experience!

If you are a highly skilled, motivated, and genuinely friendly surgeon (no snobs please), launch a fantastic chapter with us, in our gorgeous, state-of-the-art, free-standing, 12,000 sf eye center with full optical, technical, and administrative support.

Plan on starting with 400 cataracts per year in a sexy new multispecialty ASC (which you should buy into!).

Work with every conceivable type of patient, injury, and medical/surgical eye disease, in close collaboration with me and our two fabulous, eminently capable optometrists.

This is not the boonies. We currently offer Symfony and toric IOLs, iStents, blephs, SLT, PIs, and minor office adventures, but refer most surgical glaucoma, cornea/refractive, retina, peds, and complex plastics. Feel free to add new services and overflow our parking lot! Lots of latitude, minimal attitude. Just saying.

We are spoiled brats, and have every diagnostic/treatment gadget that we want. We work our technicians, scribes, and opticians like rented mules, to make the docs' day easier (somewhat kidding). Our expert full-time IT, HR, and billing heros will keep your productivity maximized. So far we have refused to implement EMR, because they are sucky, and slow us down. There, I said it.

You will make serious Benjamins, with full bennies. We even have our own in-house Krav Maga studio. Weird, huh? Prepare to be amazed, not appalled. We're looking for a long term partner track relationship, with the all the responsibilities that requires, but you'll be treated like royalty.

Wolf Eye Center is strategically located in suburban Wasilla, in the Mat-Su Valley of southcentral Alaska. It's a spectacular setting of natural beauty with endless outdoor recreation possibilities, excellent schools, small town charm, actual cultural events, minimal traffic, no commuting, paltry sales tax, and no state income tax!

Please visit www.alaskavisit.com for an intro to our area. It's mostly true! And again, this isn't the edge of the earth. I'm from New Jersey, and I believe we've got pretty much every urban/suburban amenity here. Except decent pizza. It's pretty awful. I have to make it on the grill.

I really look forward to discussing this position with you (and trying to convince you how wonderful winter can be). Please email your situation to me (This email address is being protected from spambots. This is really great news!  Here's some incredible news from one of the best Ophthalmology training and eye research centers in the U.S.; Wills Eye Hospital. Take a look.

wills eye hospital study device for the blind

WILLS EYE SPONSORS FIRST U.S. STUDY OF DEVICE FOR BLIND RETINITIS PIGMENTOSA PATIENTS

WILLS EYE HOSPITAL SPONSORS FIRST U.S. “EARLY FEASIBILITY STUDY” OF NEW IMPLANTABLE DEVICE FOR BLIND RETINITIS PIGMENTOSA PATIENTS
Wills Eye Hospital has been given Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval to begin an early feasibility study (EFS) to implant the RETINA IMPLANT Alpha AMS sub-retinal device in patients blind due to Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP). The Alpha AMS is manufactured by Retina Implant AG, Reutlingen, Germany and has been designed to replace the non-functioning and absent photoreceptor cells in the eye lost to the RP deterioration. The surgically implanted Alpha AMS chip stimulates the remaining components of the visual system to restore limited functional vision in blind RP patients. The eye’s own natural focusing system (without the need of a camera) focuses light on a chip made of 1600 photo diodes. The RETINA IMPLANT Alpha AMS is an investigational device in the US and has CE Mark approval in Europe since 2016.

“This study represents the very earliest phase of clinically testing a potential new option for patients and families grappling with the devastating blindness caused by Retinitis Pigmentosa. We are thankful for the smooth process in working with the FDA and for the opportunity of offering this exciting technology in the form of an EFS investigational study to our blind RP patients for the first time in the U.S.” noted Julia A. Haller, MD, Wills Eye Hospital Ophthalmologist-in-Chief.

Retinitis pigmentosa is a degenerative eye disease which is the leading cause of inherited blindness in the developed world. There is no known cure for RP which affects an estimated 100,000 people in the USA and 1.5 million people worldwide. Approximately 1,500 individuals with RP each year progress to total blindness. Wills Eye Hospital is the only site in North America conducting this investigational research study and will enroll up to eight patients for implantation. If this initial study demonstrates encouraging results, a larger pivotal study will be performed to gain FDA approval.

Here's a neat fact about the Wills Eye Hospital: More ophthalmologists have trained at Wills Eye than any other program in the U.S.

Wills Eye Hospital is absolutely unique in all the world: a gift of the Quaker merchant James Wills to the City of Philadelphia in 1832.  He gave the fortune he made from his grocery business, to build a hospital for the indigent blind – and thus Wills became the nation’s first eye specialty hospital.
In 1839, the first physician to be trained in Ophthalmology as a specialty came to Wills, and in our 185 years of existence we have trained the most ophthalmologists of any program in the country.
